Lake Sumner, nestled in the remote Lewis Pass region of the West Coast, is a pristine alpine lake that feels a world away from the tourist trail. Its vivid turquoise waters, set against a backdrop of beech forest and rugged peaks, offer a serene escape for those willing to venture off the beaten path. This is a place where silence reigns, broken only by the call of native birds or the gentle lap of water against the shore.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend half a day to a full day at Lake Sumner. If you're driving the Lewis Pass (State Highway 7), allow at least 2–3 hours to enjoy a short walk and a picnic. For a more immersive experience, consider an overnight stay at the Lake Sumner Hut (bookable via DOC) and explore the longer trails. The area is best visited between November and April when the weather is milder.
