Kawarau Bridge, just east of Queenstown, is the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping. Since 1988, this historic 43-metre-high bridge has drawn thrill-seekers to leap over the turquoise Kawarau River, surrounded by dramatic schist rock faces and vineyards. Even if you don't jump, the viewing platform offers heart-pumping action and a quintessential Kiwi adrenaline experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungy Jumping: Take the plunge from the original AJ Hackett bungy bridge – you can touch the river or stay dry, and even go tandem.
- Kawarau River: Watch jumpers plummet against the backdrop of the stunning river gorge; the water's colour shifts from milky blue to emerald.
- Historic Bridge: The 1880s wrought-iron bridge itself is a heritage structure – walk across it for free and soak in the views.
- Vineyards & Wineries: The surrounding Gibbston Valley is prime pinot noir country; combine your visit with wine tasting at nearby cellar doors.
- Kawarau Gorge: The area offers scenic walking trails and picnic spots along the riverbank.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours if you're just watching and taking photos; if you're jumping, budget around 2–3 hours including check-in, briefing, and the leap itself. The site is a perfect quick stop on the way between Queenstown and Cromwell or Wanaka.
