Karamea is the last frontier of the West Coast, a remote and wild settlement at the end of State Highway 67. Surrounded by lush rainforest, rugged mountains, and the untamed Tasman Sea, it offers a true escape from the modern world. The journey here is an adventure in itself, winding through dramatic river gorges and endless native bush. Karamea is the gateway to the extraordinary Ōpārara Basin and the famous Oparara Arches, a must-see for nature lovers.
Highlights & What to See
- Oparara Arches – Explore the magnificent limestone arches in the Ōpārara Basin, including the 43m-high Moria Gate Arch and the delicate Box Canyon Arch. The rainforest walks are magical.
- Karamea River – Perfect for fishing, kayaking, and serene swimming. The river mouth is a great spot for a picnic with coastal views.
- Kahurangi National Park – A vast wilderness offering excellent tramping, from the Heaphy Track to shorter walks like the Fenian Track. Spot native birds and ancient forests.
- Karamea Estuary – A haven for birdlife, including white herons and royal spoonbills. Walk the estuary loop for peaceful scenery.
- The Old School Arts Centre – A local hub for art, craft, and community events. Check out the gallery and maybe catch a live performance.
- Karamea Beaches – Wild, black-sand beaches like Umere and Granity offer dramatic surf and solitude. Great for beachcombing and sunset walks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Karamea deserves at least two full days to truly experience its highlights. One day for the Oparara Arches and a hike in Kahurangi National Park, and another to explore the town, estuary, and beaches. If you're a keen tramper, add an extra day for a longer walk. The journey from Westport takes about 1.5 hours, so plan to arrive early.
