Jackson Bay

Jackson Bay is a remote, windswept settlement at the end of the South Island's West Coast, where the Southern Alps meet the Tasman Sea. This tiny fishing village, with its small harbour and a handful of baches, feels like the edge of the world. The drive here along the coast is spectacular, and the bay itself offers a sense of isolation and raw natural beauty that epitomises the West Coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Jackson Bay itself is a quick stop – allow an hour or two to enjoy the wharf, grab a meal at The Cray Pot, and take a short walk. Most visitors come as a day trip from Franz Josef or Haast, making it a 1–2 hour detour from the main highway. If you want to explore the nearby walks and lakes, plan for a half-day.
