Hokitika Gorge is one of New Zealand's most photogenic natural wonders, where the Hokitika River carves through ancient granite, creating a narrow chasm of brilliant turquoise water. The vivid blue hue, caused by 'rock flour' from glacial erosion, is almost surreal against the mossy green native bush. A short, well-maintained walking track leads to a swing bridge that offers jaw-dropping views of the gorge from above. It's a must-stop on any West Coast road trip, easily accessible from the town of Hokitika and a perfect quick detour between glaciers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes exploring the gorge track and taking photos. If you're a keen photographer or want a more relaxed pace, allow up to an hour. The walk is short and easy, making it ideal as a quick stop en route between Hokitika and Franz Josef Glacier. Combine it with a visit to the Hokitika Gorge Scenic Reserve picnic area for a peaceful lunch break.
