The Heaphy Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks, a 78.4-kilometer journey through the diverse landscapes of Kahurangi National Park. This multi-day tramp takes you from the rugged West Coast beaches to the lush beech forests and tussock downs of the interior, ending at the golden sands of the Tasman Sea. It's a true wilderness experience, offering a chance to spot rare birds like the kiwi and weka, and soak in natural hot pools along the way.
Highlights & What to See
- West Coast beaches: Walk along the wild, windswept coastline with dramatic cliffs and seal colonies.
- Gouland Downs: Expansive tussock-covered plains with limestone outcrops and alpine flowers.
- Perry Saddle Hut: A historic backcountry hut with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
- Heaphy River: Cross the river via swing bridges and spot native birds in the podocarp forest.
- Natural hot pools: Soak in the warm waters near the Heaphy Hut, a perfect reward after a long day.
- Brown Kiwi: Listen for the call of the kiwi at night, especially around the Lewis and Mackay huts.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most walkers complete the Heaphy Track in 4-6 days, with a typical itinerary of 4 days/3 nights. You can walk from east to west (starting at Brown Hut) or west to east (starting at Kohaihai), with the latter being slightly easier due to the gradient. Plan to hike 5-8 hours per day, carrying all your food and gear. Book huts and campsites in advance during peak season (October to April).
