Haast is a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the rainforest meets the Tasman Sea. It's the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wāhipounamu and a place of raw, untamed beauty. The Haast River, with its milky blue waters, flows past the town into the sea, and the surrounding area is a paradise for nature lovers seeking solitude and dramatic landscapes.

Aim for a full day to explore the highlights around Haast, or two days if you want to do longer walks like the Brewster Track or Rob Roy Glacier. Most visitors pass through on the drive between Wanaka and Franz Josef, but an overnight stay allows you to experience the area's tranquility and evening wildlife.
