Haast Township

Haast Township is a tiny settlement at the gateway to the wild West Coast, where the Haast River meets the Tasman Sea. It's the last outpost before the road climbs over the Haast Pass into Central Otago, and it serves as a low-key base for exploring the surrounding World Heritage-listed wilderness. Expect dramatic skies, ancient rainforest, and a palpable sense of isolation.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through on a self-drive itinerary between the West Coast and Wanaka. Plan to stop for at least 2–3 hours to stretch your legs on a short walk and grab a bite. If you're keen on penguin-spotting or want to explore the area's longer tramps (like the Copland Track), consider an overnight stay. The township itself is small – a couple of motels, a pub, and a general store – but the surrounding nature is immense.
