The Haast Pass Highway is one of New Zealand's most dramatic alpine roads, slicing through the Southern Alps between the West Coast and Central Otago. This 145 km stretch of State Highway 6 winds through ancient beech forests, past thundering waterfalls, and over a mountain pass that tops out at just 562 metres. For travellers, it's not merely a route but a destination in itself, offering a raw, untamed slice of Te Waipounamu / South Island wilderness. The road is sealed but narrow and winding, so take your time—every bend reveals a new vista of glacier-carved valleys, moss-draped rainforest, and rivers the colour of milky jade.
Highlights & What to See
- Thunder Creek Falls – A 28-metre cascade plunging into a deep pool, easily reached via a short 10-minute walk through lush ferns.
- Fantail Falls – A delicate fan-shaped waterfall just a brief stroll from the road, perfect for a quick photo stop.
- Blue Pools Walk – An easy 30-minute return walk leads to crystal-clear pools fed by glacial meltwater, where on sunny days the water shimmers an impossible turquoise.
- Haast Pass Summit – At 562 metres, the actual pass is unassuming, but the drive up offers sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
- Gates of Haast – A series of rapids and gorges where the Haast River squeezes through narrow rock chasms; there's a short viewing platform.
- Makarora – A tiny settlement at the eastern end of the highway, serving as a gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and a great spot for a coffee break.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day to drive the Haast Pass Highway one way, allowing at least 3–4 hours of driving time plus stops. Most travellers take 4–6 hours to soak in the scenery, do a few short walks, and enjoy a picnic lunch. If you're short on time, you can drive it in 2.5 hours non-stop, but that would miss the point entirely. For a richer experience, consider breaking the journey with an overnight stay in either Haast or Wanaka.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – The West Coast glacier towns are a 1.5-hour drive north, offering helicopter tours and valley walks.
- Wanaka – A vibrant lakeside town 1.5 hours east of the pass, with excellent dining, hiking, and water activities.
- Haast Village – At the western end of the highway, this small settlement is a base for fishing, jet boating, and exploring the Haast River.
- Mount Aspiring National Park – The eastern approach to the pass skirts this UNESCO World Heritage area, with world-class tramping and climbing.
- Jackson Bay – A scenic 30-minute detour from Haast village leads to this remote coastal settlement, famous for its whitebait and stunning ocean views.
