Haast Pass Highway

The Haast Pass Highway is one of New Zealand's most dramatic alpine roads, slicing through the Southern Alps between the West Coast and Central Otago. This 145 km stretch of State Highway 6 winds through ancient beech forests, past thundering waterfalls, and over a mountain pass that tops out at just 562 metres. For travellers, it's not merely a route but a destination in itself, offering a raw, untamed slice of Te Waipounamu / South Island wilderness. The road is sealed but narrow and winding, so take your time—every bend reveals a new vista of glacier-carved valleys, moss-draped rainforest, and rivers the colour of milky jade.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full day to drive the Haast Pass Highway one way, allowing at least 3–4 hours of driving time plus stops. Most travellers take 4–6 hours to soak in the scenery, do a few short walks, and enjoy a picnic lunch. If you're short on time, you can drive it in 2.5 hours non-stop, but that would miss the point entirely. For a richer experience, consider breaking the journey with an overnight stay in either Haast or Wanaka.
