Doubtful Sound

Deep in Fiordland National Park, Doubtful Sound is a wild, brooding fjord that feels more remote and immense than its famous neighbour Milford Sound. Carved by ancient glaciers, its dark waters plunge over 400 metres, flanked by sheer cliffs draped in temperate rainforest and cascading waterfalls that appear after rain. Accessible only by a combination of boat and road journey over Wilmot Pass, the trip itself becomes an adventure, rewarding you with profound silence broken only by the call of a kiwi or the splash of a bottlenose dolphin. This is raw New Zealand at its most elemental.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate a full day and night for the most rewarding experience. The typical overnight cruise departs Manapouri in the late afternoon, includes a coach ride over Wilmot Pass, and returns the next morning. If you’re short on time, a day cruise (roughly 8 hours) is possible, but you’ll miss the magical twilight and dawn on the water. Plan for the journey from Te Anau or Queenstown, as Doubtful Sound is not a quick stop.
