Thundering into a mossy amphitheatre of native bush, Devils Punchbowl Falls is one of the most accessible and awe-inspiring waterfalls on New Zealand's West Coast. Just a short walk from the centre of Franz Josef, this 131-metre cascade plunges from a hanging valley into a deep pool, sending up a constant mist that nourishes lush rainforest. The short but steep track rewards you with a front-row view of raw glacial power – a must-do for any visitor to the region.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1–1.5 hours for the return walk, including time to soak in the views. The track is steep in places but well-maintained, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Visit in the late afternoon when the light filters through the forest canopy, or early morning for fewer crowds. The falls are impressive year-round, but spring and autumn offer the best balance of flow and comfortable weather.
