Central Otago, the world’s southernmost wine-growing region, is a dramatic landscape of rugged mountains, glacial lakes, and golden tussock hills. This is New Zealand’s pinot noir heartland, where cool-climate wines thrive under intense sun and crisp nights. The region’s boutique cellar doors, many with stunning vineyard views, offer a refined yet relaxed tasting experience. Beyond the vines, you’ll find historic gold-mining towns, cycling trails, and adventure activities that make this a must-visit for any self-drive itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow at least two to three days to explore the region properly. A full day can be spent on the Gibbston and Bannockburn wine trails, with a second day for Queenstown, Arrowtown, or the Rail Trail. If you’re short on time, a half-day tour from Queenstown covers several cellar doors, but you’ll miss the slower pace and scenic drives.
