Cape Foulwind, despite its blustery name, is a stunning headland on the West Coast's rugged coastline, offering dramatic seascapes and a thriving fur seal colony. Named by Captain Cook for the relentless winds, this wild promontory is a must-stop for nature lovers and photographers. The short, wheelchair-friendly walk to the lighthouse reveals sweeping views of the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps on clear days. Keep your camera ready for the playful seals basking on the rocks below.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Foulwind Walkway: An easy 3.4 km return track (1 hour) from the carpark to the lighthouse, with interpretive panels and seal viewing platforms. The path is sealed and suitable for all fitness levels.
- Fur Seal Colony: A large New Zealand fur seal colony lives at the base of the cliffs. Best viewed from the lookout points – watch pups play in rockpools and adults haul out on the boulders.
- Lighthouse: The historic 1876 lighthouse stands sentinel; while not open to the public, its white tower against the blue sky makes a classic photo.
- Birdlife: Spot oystercatchers, shags, and the occasional white-fronted tern. In season, you may see migrating whales offshore.
- Tauranga Bay: A short drive south, this beautiful beach has a seal colony right by the car park and is a great spot for a picnic or a stroll.
