Arthurs Pass is the rugged heart of New Zealand's Southern Alps, a place where the air smells of alpine herbs and the roar of braided rivers fills the valley. This small village, perched at 740 metres, is the gateway to some of the South Island's most dramatic mountain scenery. It's a base for trampers, climbers, and anyone who wants to feel the raw power of the natural world, with the TranzAlpine train clattering through as a reminder of the human spirit that carved a route through these peaks.
Highlights & What to See
- Arthur's Pass National Park – New Zealand's third national park, a vast wilderness of beech forest, alpine tarns, and glaciated peaks. The visitor centre is a great first stop for trail advice and weather updates.
- Devils Punchbowl Waterfall – A short, steep walk leads to a viewing platform where this 131-metre cascade thunders into a rocky amphitheatre. The spray on your face is part of the experience.
- Otira Viaduct Lookout – A modern engineering marvel that hugs a sheer cliff face. The short walk to the lookout offers vertiginous views down the Otira Gorge and across the valley.
- Temple Basin Ski Area – In winter, this club field offers raw, uncrowded slopes and a 45-minute walk-in that rewards with a stunning alpine hut and terrain for intermediate to advanced skiers.
- Kea Spotting – The world's only alpine parrot, these mischievous green birds are often found around the village and car park. Keep your car locked and your snacks hidden – they're clever thieves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend a day passing through on the drive between Christchurch and the West Coast, but Arthur's Pass rewards a longer stay. If you're driving, allow at least 2–3 hours for a short walk (like the Devils Punchbowl) and a stop at the visitor centre. For trampers, a night or two lets you tackle a section of the famous Mingha-Deception route or explore the Goat Pass area. The village itself is small – you can see it in 30 minutes – but the surrounding trails deserve a full day or more.

- Castle Hill – 55 km east, a surreal landscape of limestone boulders that's a popular stop on the way to Christchurch.
- Punakaiki (Pancake Rocks) – 180 km north, where layered limestone formations and blowholes explode at high tide – a classic West Coast stop.
- Christchurch – 155 km east, the garden city and gateway to the Canterbury Plains, perfect for resupplying before heading into the mountains.
