Arthurs Pass is the rugged heart of New Zealand's Southern Alps, a place where the air smells of alpine herbs and the roar of braided rivers fills the valley. This small village, perched at 740 metres, is the gateway to some of the South Island's most dramatic mountain scenery. It's a base for trampers, climbers, and anyone who wants to feel the raw power of the natural world, with the TranzAlpine train clattering through as a reminder of the human spirit that carved a route through these peaks.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend a day passing through on the drive between Christchurch and the West Coast, but Arthur's Pass rewards a longer stay. If you're driving, allow at least 2–3 hours for a short walk (like the Devils Punchbowl) and a stop at the visitor centre. For trampers, a night or two lets you tackle a section of the famous Mingha-Deception route or explore the Goat Pass area. The village itself is small – you can see it in 30 minutes – but the surrounding trails deserve a full day or more.
