Arthur's Pass National Park is a raw, mountainous wilderness straddling the Southern Alps, where the road clings to sheer cliffs and the air smells of alpine herbs and damp beech forest. This is the gateway between Canterbury and the West Coast, a place where kea (the world's only alpine parrot) will cheekily inspect your car and the roar of waterfalls fills the valleys. It's a must for hikers, photographers, and anyone craving dramatic, untamed New Zealand scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Arthur's Pass Village – The tiny alpine settlement serves as the park's hub, with a historic railway station, DOC visitor centre (great for trail info), and the chance to spot kea swooping around the carpark.
- Devil's Punchbowl Falls – A short, steep walk through rainforest leads to a viewing platform at the base of a 131-metre waterfall – especially thunderous after rain.
- Otira Viaduct Lookout – Drive or walk to this viewpoint for vertiginous views over the steel-and-concrete viaduct that clings to the mountainside, a feat of engineering on SH73.
- Bealey Valley Track – A moderate 45-minute loop through beech forest and across swing bridges, offering classic alpine vistas and the chance to see mountain parakeets.
- Temple Basin Ski Area – In winter, this club field offers challenging slopes; in summer, the 4WD track gives access to tussock basins and spectacular views of Mount Rolleston.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors experience Arthur's Pass as a scenic drive stop – allow 2–3 hours for a short walk and photo stops. To truly appreciate the park, spend a full day hiking one of the longer trails like the Avalanche Peak Track (6–8 hours return). If you're a keen tramper, consider an overnight stay at one of the backcountry huts. The park is best visited between November and April for milder weather.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Castle Hill – 40 minutes east on the way to Christchurch, this area features surreal limestone rock formations that are a favourite for bouldering and photography.
- Lake Brunner – A serene, forest-fringed lake an hour north-west, perfect for kayaking, fishing, or a peaceful overnight stop at the village of Moana.
