Arthur's Pass National Park is a raw, mountainous wilderness straddling the Southern Alps, where the road clings to sheer cliffs and the air smells of alpine herbs and damp beech forest. This is the gateway between Canterbury and the West Coast, a place where kea (the world's only alpine parrot) will cheekily inspect your car and the roar of waterfalls fills the valleys. It's a must for hikers, photographers, and anyone craving dramatic, untamed New Zealand scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors experience Arthur's Pass as a scenic drive stop – allow 2–3 hours for a short walk and photo stops. To truly appreciate the park, spend a full day hiking one of the longer trails like the Avalanche Peak Track (6–8 hours return). If you're a keen tramper, consider an overnight stay at one of the backcountry huts. The park is best visited between November and April for milder weather.
