Perched on the shores of Lake Angelus in Nelson Lakes National Park, this iconic alpine hut is a backcountry gem that delivers one of New Zealand's finest overnight tramping experiences. Accessible only on foot or by helicopter, the journey to Angelus Hut rewards you with crystalline alpine lakes, jagged peaks, and a genuine sense of remoteness that defines the South Island's high country.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Angelus – A stunning turquoise tarn surrounded by rocky bluffs; perfect for a refreshing dip on a warm day.
- Angelus Hut itself – A modern, 28-bunk hut with solar lighting, wood burner, and panoramic windows that frame the alpine scenery.
- Robert Ridge Track – The classic approach, a challenging but breathtaking ridge walk with 360-degree views of the Travers and Sabine ranges.
- Mount Angelus summit – A side trip from the hut offering commanding views over the park and beyond.
- Stargazing – Far from light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular, especially during clear winter nights.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most trampers allocate two days and one night for the return trip from the road end at St Arnaud. The ascent via Robert Ridge takes 5–7 hours, leaving plenty of time to explore the lake and hut environs in the afternoon. If you're short on time, a helicopter flight from St Arnaud can whisk you in for a day trip, but staying overnight allows you to soak up the sunrise and sunset colours over the lake.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- St Arnaud – The gateway village with a DOC visitor centre, café, and lakefront walks.
- Lake Rotoiti – A scenic lake just minutes from St Arnaud, ideal for kayaking, swimming, or a gentle stroll along the Honeydew Walk.
- Blue Lake (Tasman District) – One of the clearest lakes in the world, accessible via a separate tramping route from the park.
- Nelson Lakes National Park – Extend your trip with other tramps like the Travers-Sabine Circuit or the Mount Robert Loop.
