Franz Josef Glacier is one of New Zealand's most accessible and dramatic natural wonders. This immense river of ice cascades from the Southern Alps down to temperate rainforest, a rare phenomenon that allows you to walk on ancient ice just a few kilometres from the coast. The Māori name, Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere, tells the story of a princess whose tears formed the glacier. The tiny alpine village of Franz Josef serves as your base, with a surprisingly vibrant food scene and a relaxed, outdoorsy vibe.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk on the glacier: Guided heli-hikes and ice-climbing trips take you onto the blue ice, where you can explore crevasses and ice caves. The experience is surreal and humbling.
- Terminal face walk: A free 1.5-hour return walk from the car park to the glacier's terminal face, passing moraine and views of the ice. It's the easiest way to see the glacier up close.
- Lake Matheson: Just a short drive away, this mirror lake reflects Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. The easy loop track is a photographer's dream, especially at sunrise or sunset.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre: See rare kiwi birds and learn about the region's conservation efforts. The centre is a great wet-weather option.
- Hot pools: Soak in the glacier-fed hot pools at the base of the valley – a perfect end to a day of hiking.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for two days to fully experience Franz Josef. Day one: do a heli-hike or ice-climbing trip in the morning, then walk the terminal face in the afternoon. Day two: drive to Lake Matheson for sunrise, explore the village, and perhaps take a scenic flight over the glacier. If you're short on time, a full day can cover a heli-hike and the terminal face walk, but you'll miss the lake.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Fox Glacier: Just 25 minutes south, Fox Glacier is less crowded and offers a similar heli-hike experience. The drive between the two glaciers is stunning.
- Punakaiki: The Pancake Rocks and blowholes are a two-hour drive north. Stop here for a dramatic coastal walk and a glimpse of the region's unique geology.
- Hokitika: A quirky coastal town known for its pounamu (greenstone) carving, wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge. It's an hour north and a good spot for lunch or an overnight stop.
