Stretching from the wild Tasman Sea to the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps, Westland Tai Poutini National Park is a realm of dramatic contrasts. Here, ancient glaciers grind down through temperate rainforest, and coastal lagoons host abundant birdlife. This World Heritage-listed park offers some of New Zealand's most accessible glacier walks, mirror-like lakes, and a raw, untamed beauty that will leave you awestruck.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier & Fox Glacier – Walk right up to the terminal faces of these dynamic glaciers; guided heli-hikes take you onto the ice itself.
- Lake Matheson – Famous for its mirror reflections of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman; the easy loop walk is best at dawn or dusk.
- Okarito Lagoon – New Zealand's largest unmodified wetland; kayak or take a boat tour to spot kotuku (white herons) and other birds.
- Gillespies Beach – A wild black-sand beach with a historic gold-mining settlement and seal colony at the far end.
- Copland Track – A classic backcountry tramp leading to the natural hot pools at Welcome Flat Hut (allow 2–3 days return).
Suggested Time to Spend
To experience the park's highlights, plan at least two full days. Spend day one exploring Franz Josef Glacier and a short walk like the Sentinel Rock Walk or the glacier valley walk. On day two, drive south to Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson, and perhaps an evening at Okarito. If you're a keen tramper, add extra days for the Copland Track or a multi-day hike on the nearby Gillespies Beach–Paringa route.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Village – Base camp for glacier activities, with hot pools, eateries, and the West Coast Wildlife Centre.
- Fox Glacier Village – Smaller and quieter, with easy access to Lake Matheson and the glacier.
- Haast Pass – A scenic drive over the Southern Alps, linking to Wanaka and Central Otago.
- Hokitika – A charming coastal town known for pounamu (greenstone) carving, wild beaches, and the Hokitika Gorge.
- Punakaiki & the Pancake Rocks – About two hours north, famous for layered limestone formations and blowholes.
