Westland National Park is a dramatic slice of New Zealand's West Coast wilderness, where ancient glaciers carve through temperate rainforest and plunge towards the Tasman Sea. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a realm of extremes: expect misty valleys, roaring waterfalls, and the eerie blue ice of the Franz Josef and Fox glaciers. It's a must for hikers and heli-hikers alike.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days allows you to experience both glaciers, Lake Matheson, and a short walk or flight. If you're short on time, a single day can cover a glacier walk and a quick stop at Lake Matheson, but you'll miss the full immersion. For trampers, add 2–3 days for the Copland Track or a multi-day glacier hike.
