High above the rainforest floor, the West Coast Tree Top Walk offers a unique perspective on the ancient podocarp forest near Franz Josef Glacier. This accessible canopy walkway, built with minimal environmental impact, takes you 20 metres up into the treetops, where you can wander among rimu, kamahi, and other native giants. The gentle incline and viewing platforms make it easy for all ages and fitness levels, and the interpretive panels provide insight into the forest ecology and Māori history. A highlight is the 47-metre-long canopy bridge, which sways gently as you take in the lush green panorama and – on a clear day – glimpse the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow around 45 minutes to 1 hour for the walk itself, including time to read the panels and soak in the views. The loop is leisurely and flat, so it’s easy to fit in as a morning or afternoon activity. If you’re on a tight schedule, you can even do it in 30 minutes. Many visitors pair it with a glacier tour or a stop at Lake Matheson, making for a full day in the Franz Josef area.
