West Coast Glaciers

New Zealand's West Coast glaciers are among the most accessible in the world, where massive rivers of ancient ice spill down from the Southern Alps into temperate rainforest. Franz Josef and Fox glaciers are the superstars, offering you the chance to walk on ice that has been frozen for thousands of years. The experience is raw and humbling: the crunch of crampons on blue ice, the roar of meltwater cascading into crevasses, and the ever-present mist that clings to the valley walls. Whether you view them from a helicopter or hike to the terminal face, these glaciers are a must-see on any South Island itinerary.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least two full days to explore the glaciers properly. One day for Franz Josef and one for Fox Glacier, with time for a heli-hike or guided walk on each. If you're short on time, a single day can cover a heli-hike on one glacier plus a visit to Lake Matheson, but you'll be rushing. For a relaxed pace, three days allow for a glacier walk, a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon, and a scenic drive along the stunning coast.
