Waipapa Point, on the wild Catlins coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a place of stark beauty and poignant history. The powerful Southern Ocean crashes against a lonely white lighthouse, while the remains of the 1881 shipwreck of the SS Tararua lie just offshore. It's a windswept, moody landscape that feels like the edge of the world, with sea lions often hauled out on the beach below the lighthouse.
Highlights & What to See
- Waipapa Point Lighthouse: This photogenic wooden lighthouse, built in 1884 in response to the Tararua tragedy, stands as a sentinel. Climb the small hill for sweeping views of the rugged coastline.
- New Zealand Sea Lions: The beach is a regular haul-out spot for the endangered NZ sea lion (Rāpoka). Watch from a respectful distance – they are large and can move surprisingly fast.
- Shipwreck History: Interpretive panels tell the story of the SS Tararua, New Zealand's worst civilian shipwreck, which claimed 131 lives. You can still see the wreck site at low tide.
- Scenic Walk: A short, easy loop walk from the car park leads to the lighthouse and along the clifftop, offering dramatic views of the ocean and the chance to spot seabirds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Waipapa Point is a quick but rewarding stop. Plan for 30 minutes to an hour – enough time to walk to the lighthouse, read the history panels, and watch for sea lions on the beach. It's best visited in the late afternoon when the light softens and the sea lions are often more active.
