Waipapa Point, on the wild Catlins coast of New Zealand's South Island, is a place of stark beauty and poignant history. The powerful Southern Ocean crashes against a lonely white lighthouse, while the remains of the 1881 shipwreck of the SS Tararua lie just offshore. It's a windswept, moody landscape that feels like the edge of the world, with sea lions often hauled out on the beach below the lighthouse.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Waipapa Point is a quick but rewarding stop. Plan for 30 minutes to an hour – enough time to walk to the lighthouse, read the history panels, and watch for sea lions on the beach. It's best visited in the late afternoon when the light softens and the sea lions are often more active.
