Twizel is a purpose-built town on the South Island's Mackenzie Country, created in the 1960s to house workers constructing the Waitaki hydroelectric scheme. Today, it's a quiet yet well-serviced base for exploring the stunning turquoise lakes, braided rivers, and alpine scenery of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. With a population of just over 1,000, Twizel offers a relaxed pace, excellent fishing, and easy access to some of New Zealand's most iconic landscapes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two nights is ideal to explore Twizel and its surroundings. Spend the first afternoon walking the Twizel River or visiting Lake Ohau. On the full day, drive to Aoraki/Mount Cook for a hike (allow 3–4 hours for Hooker Valley) and stop at Lake Pukaki viewpoints on the way. If you're a keen angler or stargazer, add an extra night.
