Climbing from the Pacific coast at Christchurch over the Southern Alps to the rainforests of the West Coast, the TranzAlpine Train is one of the world's great scenic rail journeys. The 4.5-hour trip crosses 19 viaducts and burrows through 16 tunnels, with carriage-side windows and an open-air viewing carriage that let you soak up epic views of the Canterbury Plains, the braided Waimakariri River, and the snowy peaks of Arthur's Pass National Park. It's a bucket-list day trip from Christchurch or a spectacular way to arrive at the glaciers.
Highlights & What to See
- Canterbury Plains to Southern Alps – Watch the flat farmland give way to the foothills and then the dramatic alpine landscape.
- Waimakariri River Valley – The train hugs this braided river, with turquoise water and shingle banks stretching to the mountains.
- Arthur's Pass National Park – The train stops briefly at this alpine village; you can stretch your legs and feel the crisp mountain air.
- Otira Viaduct – A dramatic curved bridge that sweeps over a deep gorge, with views of waterfalls and dense rainforest.
- Open-air viewing carriage – No glass between you and the scenery – perfect for photos and feeling the wind.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day for the round trip from Christchurch (departing around 8:15am, returning by 6pm). If you're heading to the West Coast, book it as a one-way journey – you can break the trip at Arthur's Pass for a few hours of short walks, then continue to Greymouth. The train runs daily year-round, but check the timetable as services can be reduced in winter.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Arthur's Pass National Park – Get off the train for a few hours to walk the Devil's Punchbowl waterfall track or the shorter Dobson Nature Walk.
- Greymouth – The western terminus; visit the left-bank historic precinct or join a tour to the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki.
- Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers – From Greymouth, drive 2 hours south to the glaciers for heli-hikes and hot pools.
- Punakaiki Pancake Rocks – A 45-minute drive north of Greymouth; see the layered limestone formations and blowholes at high tide.
