Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and the starting point for most trips to Milford Sound. This small lakeside town sits on the shores of Lake Te Anau, New Zealand's second-largest lake, and offers a relaxed base for exploring some of the country's most dramatic scenery. The surrounding fiords, forests, and mountains are a paradise for hikers, kayakers, and nature lovers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2–3 nights in Te Anau. This allows a day for Milford Sound (including the scenic drive from Te Anau), a day for a shorter walk or the glowworm caves, and a day for Doubtful Sound or a section of the Kepler Track. If you're a keen hiker, allow 3–4 days for the full Kepler Track. Many travellers combine Te Anau with Queenstown and the West Coast glaciers as part of a South Island loop.
