Takaka is the sunny heart of Golden Bay, a mellow town where the pace of life slows to a gentle drift. Surrounded by limestone hills and sculpted by the sea, this creative enclave draws artists, musicians, and nature lovers to its clear rivers, golden beaches, and quirky cafés. The air smells of salt and native bush, and you'll soon find yourself falling into the easy rhythm of this far-northwest corner of the South Island.
Highlights & What to See
- Te Waikoropupū Springs – Among the clearest freshwater springs in the world, with a mesmerising blue hue and an almost sacred calm. Walk the short boardwalk and watch the water pulse from the limestone.
- Farewell Spit – A 30km sandspit curving into the Tasman Sea, a crucial bird sanctuary and a spectacular place for a guided tour or a walk to the lighthouse.
- Abel Tasman National Park – The park's western entrance is just east of Takaka, offering golden beaches, turquoise coves, and the famous Coast Track – accessible by water taxi, kayak, or foot.
- Golden Bay Kayaking – Paddle the calm, clear waters of the bay, often accompanied by seals and seabirds, with limestone cliffs and hidden caves to explore.
- Takaka Hill – The winding drive over this marble mountain is an attraction in itself, with epic views and the Ngarua Caves to visit.
