Stewart Island
Stewart Island, New Zealand's third-largest island, is a wild and remote sanctuary where nature reigns supreme. Known for its untouched landscapes, abundant birdlife, and peaceful pace of life, this is a place to disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in raw, natural beauty. The only town, Oban, is a charming settlement with a handful of cafes and accommodations, but the real draw lies in the island's vast national park, pristine beaches, and the chance to spot the elusive kiwi in the wild.
Highlights & What to See
- Rakiura National Park: Covering most of the island, this park offers incredible hikes through dense native forest, along stunning coastlines, and up to panoramic viewpoints. The Rakiura Track is a must-do multi-day walk.
- Ulva Island: A predator-free bird sanctuary just a short water taxi from Oban, where you can see native species like the Stewart Island robin, saddleback, and weka up close.
- Kiwi Spotting: Stewart Island is one of the best places to see wild kiwi. Join a guided night walk on the beach or at the golf course for a chance to encounter these iconic birds.
- Oban: The island's only township, with a relaxed vibe, local art galleries, and the excellent Rakiura Museum.
- Observation Rock: A short walk from Oban offering sweeping views of Halfmoon Bay and the surrounding islands.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two to three days to truly experience Stewart Island. This allows time for a guided kiwi spotting tour, a day hike on the Rakiura Track or Ulva Island, and leisurely exploration of Oban. If you're an avid hiker, consider four to five days to complete the full Rakiura Track or other multi-day tramps. The island moves at a slow pace, so resist the urge to rush.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Fiordland National Park: Home to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound, a dramatic contrast to Stewart Island's serene beauty.
