Okanagan
Okanagan is a tiny settlement tucked into the West Coast rainforest, just a few kilometres south of Franz Josef Glacier. It's the kind of place where you pull over for the view and end up staying an hour – a quiet, ferry-served pocket of the South Island that few travellers rush through. The real draw here is the raw, untamed nature: the bush-clad hills, the braided Waiho River, and the sense that you've found a secret corner of the glacier region.
Highlights & What to See
- Waiho River Bridge – stop on the bridge and watch the milky, glacier-fed water surge beneath you; it's a classic West Coast photo op.
- Okanagan Swamp Walk – a short boardwalk loop through dense kahikatea swamp forest, with interpretive signs about the unique wetland ecosystem.
- Okanagan Lookout – a five-minute climb from the roadside gives you a panoramic view across the river flats to the Southern Alps; on a clear day, Franz Josef Glacier is visible in the distance.
- Ferry Landing – the Okanagan Ferry shuttles locals and adventurous travellers across the Waiho River to the Okanagan Valley walk, a lesser-known tramping route into the alpine zone.
Suggested Time to Spend
An hour is plenty to soak up Okanagan's essence – walk the swamp boardwalk, snap the river view, and maybe enjoy a picnic at one of the informal pull-offs. If you're planning to take the ferry and do the Okanagan Valley walk, budget a full half-day (3–4 hours) for the return tramp. Most visitors combine Okanagan with a half-day at Franz Josef Glacier itself.
