Sealy Tarns is a breathtaking alpine lake set in a glacial cirque on the ridge between the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. The mirror-still waters reflect the surrounding peaks, offering one of the most iconic views on the West Coast. The hike up is steep but rewarding, with each switchback revealing a new perspective of the valley below.
Highlights & What to See
- The Tarns themselves – two small, pristine lakes that perfectly reflect the mountains on calm days.
- Panoramic views of Franz Josef Glacier, the Tasman Sea, and the Southern Alps from the tarn edge.
- Alpine flora – look for mountain daisies, buttercups, and the iconic Mount Cook lily in summer.
- Sunrise or sunset visits for golden light and fewer crowds.
- Kea sightings – these mischievous alpine parrots are often spotted around the tarns.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 3–4 hours return for the walk from the Franz Josef Glacier car park. The track is steep (about 600 m elevation gain) but well-maintained. Most people spend 30–60 minutes at the tarns taking photos and enjoying the serenity. Start early in the morning to avoid afternoon cloud cover and to have the place more to yourself.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – walk to the glacier terminal face or take a heli-hike.
- Fox Glacier – another accessible glacier with its own valley walk.
- Lake Matheson – famous for mirror reflections of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman.
- Okarito Lagoon – a peaceful kayaking spot and home to white herons.
- Whataroa – visit the only kotuku (white heron) breeding colony in New Zealand.
