Roys Peak is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a thigh-burning climb that rewards with one of the country's most photographed views. The track climbs steadily through tussock-covered slopes to a dramatic ridge, where the entire Wanaka basin, Lake Wanaka, and the Southern Alps unfurl beneath you. This is a classic Kiwi tramp that delivers a true sense of alpine grandeur.
Highlights & What to See
- The Summit Panorama: The 360-degree view from the top is the main event – Lake Wanaka, the Clutha River, Mount Aspiring, and the Southern Alps stretch out in every direction.
- Sunrise or Sunset Hike: Start early or go late to catch golden light painting the mountains and lake; the colours are unforgettable.
- Tussock-Clad Ridges: The trail itself is a highlight, winding through golden tussock with ever-expanding views of the lake and valleys below.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for native birds like the South Island robin and, if you're lucky, a kea (mountain parrot) near the top.
- Photography from the Ridge: The classic Instagram shot is from the ridge just below the summit, where the trail curves dramatically above the lake.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full half-day for the return hike (5–6 hours round trip, 16 km, 1300 m elevation gain). Most people start early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. The track is steep and unrelenting, so pace yourself and carry plenty of water. If you're short on time, you can still enjoy the lower sections for a shorter walk, but the summit is the real payoff.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka: The charming lakeside town is just a 10-minute drive from the trailhead – perfect for a post-hike coffee, lunch, or a dip in the lake.
- Mount Aspiring National Park: Explore deeper into the park for other world-class hikes like the Rob Roy Glacier Track or the Matukituki Valley.
- Roys Bay: A peaceful spot on the lake's edge for a picnic or a gentle paddle, just off the main trailhead.
- Cardrona Valley: Head over the Crown Range for historic Cardrona Hotel, the famous bra fence, and access to the Cardrona Alpine Resort.
- Queenstown: A scenic 45-minute drive over the Crown Range puts you in the adventure capital, with bungy, jet boats, and endless dining options.
