Rob Roy Glacier Track

The Rob Roy Glacier Track is one of the most rewarding day walks in the South Island, offering an up-close encounter with the dramatic Rob Roy Glacier. The track winds through lush beech forest, crosses swingbridges over roaring rivers, and culminates at a viewpoint where the glacier’s icefall cascades down a sheer rock face. The sound of avalanches rumbling in the distance adds to the raw, untamed atmosphere.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 3–4 hours return, covering 10 km (6.2 miles). The track is well-graded but includes some steep sections near the end. Start early in the morning to catch the best light on the glacier and avoid afternoon clouds that often roll in by 2 pm. It’s a half-day trip, leaving time for a relaxed lunch back in Wanaka or a soak at the local hot pools.
