The Rob Roy Glacier Track is one of the most rewarding day walks in the South Island, offering an up-close encounter with the dramatic Rob Roy Glacier. The track winds through lush beech forest, crosses swingbridges over roaring rivers, and culminates at a viewpoint where the glacier’s icefall cascades down a sheer rock face. The sound of avalanches rumbling in the distance adds to the raw, untamed atmosphere.
Highlights & What to See
- Rob Roy Glacier Viewpoint: The main payoff – a vast amphitheatre of ice and rock, with the glacier tumbling into a turquoise lake. On a clear day, you’ll see seracs and crevasses up close.
- Beech Forest Trail: The approach is a gentle climb through ancient silver beech and mountain beech, with ferns, mosses, and birdlife like the elusive robin (toutouwai) and fantail (pīwakawaka).
- Swingbridges over the Rob Roy Stream: Two suspension bridges add a touch of adventure and offer great views of the rushing water below.
- Avalanche Debris: In spring and early summer, you’ll likely cross patches of snow and avalanche debris – a reminder of the glacier’s active nature.
- Alpine Scenery: The track opens onto a high alpine basin surrounded by jagged peaks, including Mount Aspiring/Tititea in the distance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 3–4 hours return, covering 10 km (6.2 miles). The track is well-graded but includes some steep sections near the end. Start early in the morning to catch the best light on the glacier and avoid afternoon clouds that often roll in by 2 pm. It’s a half-day trip, leaving time for a relaxed lunch back in Wanaka or a soak at the local hot pools.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka: The gateway town, just a 40-minute drive away, with its lakefront, restaurants, and the famous #ThatWanakaTree.
- Mount Aspiring National Park: The track lies within this park, so consider extending your visit to other walks like the Isthmus Peak Track or the Blue Pools.
- Roys Peak Track: For a more strenuous day, combine with this iconic ridge walk (5–6 hours) for panoramic lake and mountain views.
- Glacier Country: Head west to Fox and Franz Josef glaciers (about 2.5 hours drive) for glacier hikes and heli-tours.
- Queenstown: A scenic 1-hour drive south, offering adventure activities, bungee jumping, and the Remarkables range.
