Punakaiki is a tiny settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, famous for the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes. This dramatic coastline, where the Tasman Sea crashes against layered limestone formations, feels wild and untamed. The village itself is a laid-back cluster of lodges and a café, set against lush rainforest and the roar of the ocean. It's a must-stop on any West Coast road trip, offering a glimpse into New Zealand’s raw natural beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Pancake Rocks & Blowholes: The star attraction – a short, wheelchair-accessible loop walk leads you through curious layered limestone stacks that look like stacks of pancakes. At high tide, the blowholes erupt with spectacular force, sending spray high into the air.
- Punakaiki Cavern: A short walk from the main road leads to a limestone cave you can explore with a torch. It’s a free, self-guided adventure into the underworld, complete with glowworms if you’re lucky.
- Pororari River Track: An easy walk through nikau palm forest along a crystal-clear river, with opportunities to swim in deep pools. It’s a serene contrast to the rugged coast.
- Paparoa National Park: The park surrounding Punakaiki offers longer tramps like the Inland Pack Track, as well as birdwatching and kayaking on the river. Keep an eye out for the rare Westland petrel.
- Truman Track: A short walk (15 minutes return) through coastal forest to a secluded beach with sea caves and rock arches – especially dramatic at sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the Pancake Rocks and blowholes, plus another hour for a short walk like the Truman Track or Pororari River. If you want to do a longer hike or go kayaking, plan for half a day. Many travellers pass through on a self-drive itinerary between Greymouth and Westport, making it a perfect lunch stop. Overnight stays are relaxed and allow you to experience the coast at dawn or dusk when the crowds thin.
