Perched above the tiny settlement of Franz Josef, the Port Hills offer a rugged, off-the-beaten-path escape into West Coast rainforest and glacial moraine. This low-key walking area is a favorite among locals for its quiet trails, birdlife, and sweeping views of the Southern Alps—especially at golden hour when the peaks catch the last light.
Highlights & What to See
- Port Hills Track: A 2–3 hour loop through dense rimu and kahikatea forest, with occasional glimpses of the Franz Josef Glacier valley. The trail is well-formed but can be muddy—good boots are essential.
- Te Moenga-o-te-Atua (The Sleeping God): A dramatic rock formation visible from the track, steeped in local Māori legend. Look for the silhouette of a reclining figure on the ridge.
- Birdwatching: Listen for the bell-like call of the tūī and the chattering of kererū (wood pigeon) in the canopy. Early morning walks are best.
- Glacier Viewpoint: A short side spur from the main track opens onto a cleared knoll with a direct view of the Franz Josef Glacier tongue—far quieter than the crowded terminal face walk.
- Historic Gold Mining Remnants: Keep an eye out for old water races and rusted machinery from the 1860s gold rush, half-swallowed by the bush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty for the Port Hills. Plan for 2–3 hours on the main loop, plus extra time to linger at the glacier viewpoint. Combine with a morning at the Franz Josef Glacier car park or an afternoon soak at the Hot Pools. If you're short on time, even a one-hour wander up the lower section rewards with forest ambiance and valley views.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier Terminal Face Walk: A short, easy walk to the glacier's moraine—perfect for a quick introduction to the ice.
- Lake Wombat Track: A serene 30-minute boardwalk loop through wetland and forest, great for families.
- Okarito Lagoon: 20 minutes north, this coastal lagoon is prime for kayaking and spotting white herons (kōtuku).
- Fox Glacier: 25 minutes south, with its own valley walk and the stunning Lake Matheson reflection.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild black-sand beach 15 minutes west, where you can explore old gold mining tunnels and seal colonies.
