Picton is the gateway to the South Island’s stunning Marlborough Sounds, a labyrinth of drowned river valleys and forest-clad hills. This compact waterfront town hums with the comings and goings of the Interislander ferries, but step away from the terminal and you’ll find a relaxed, salty-air charm. With its sheltered harbour, excellent seafood, and easy access to the Queen Charlotte Track, Picton is the perfect launchpad for exploring one of New Zealand’s most beautiful coastal regions.
Highlights & What to See
- Marlborough Sounds – Take a cruise or kayak through the tranquil bays and coves; keep an eye out for dolphins and little blue penguins.
- Queen Charlotte Track – This multi-day walk or mountain-bike ride offers jaw-dropping views of the Sounds; you can also tackle short sections like the walk to Tōtara Reserve.
- Edwin Fox Maritime Museum – Step aboard one of the world’s oldest surviving merchant sailing ships, docked right in town.
- Picton Foreshore – Stroll the waterfront path, picnic on the grass, and watch the ferries and yachts glide by.
- Marlborough Wine Region – Just a 20-minute drive away, sample world-class Sauvignon Blanc at cellar doors in Blenheim and Renwick.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors pass through Picton in a day, catching a ferry and continuing south. But to truly savour the area, allow at least two nights. Spend one day exploring the Queen Charlotte Track (or a shorter walk) and the Sounds by boat or kayak, and another day touring the Marlborough wine region or relaxing in town. If you’re hiking the full Queen Charlotte Track, budget three to five days.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Blenheim – The heart of Marlborough wine country, with dozens of cellar doors, bike trails, and the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.

- Queen Charlotte Sound – Remote lodges and bays accessible only by water taxi or on foot, perfect for a peaceful retreat.
