Papatowai is a tiny, wild settlement on the Catlins coast, where the Tautuku River meets the Pacific. This is New Zealand's southern secret – a place of windswept beaches, ancient podocarp forest, and a palpable sense of isolation. Papatowai itself is a quick stop – an hour or two to stretch your legs on the beach and walk the estuary. But to really soak up the Catlins, base yourself here for at least two nights. That gives you a full day to explore the waterfalls, caves, and coastal viewpoints, plus a relaxed evening at the local pub or stargazing on the beach.
