Otira Gorge

Otira Gorge is a dramatic, steep-sided gorge on State Highway 73, carved by the Otira River through the Southern Alps. This narrow, winding pass connects the West Coast to Canterbury and offers a thrilling drive through lush temperate rainforest, with waterfalls cascading down sheer rock faces. The road clings to the cliffside, and the ever-present mist adds an air of mystery. It's a short but unforgettable detour from Franz Josef Glacier.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 2–3 hours to drive the gorge and make short stops at the main viewpoints and walks. If you want to do a longer tramp (like the Otira Valley Track to the glacier views), plan for half a day. The drive itself is only 20 minutes, but the scenery demands lingering. Combine it with a visit to Arthur's Pass Village for lunch or a coffee.
