Okarito is a tiny, sleepy coastal settlement that feels like a secret on the West Coast. With a population of around 30, it's all about the lagoon – a vast, bird-filled wetland that's one of New Zealand's most important. The silence here is profound, broken only by the call of kotuku (white herons) and the gentle lapping of waves. It's a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature.
Highlights & What to See
- Okarito Lagoon: A huge, pristine wetland perfect for kayaking or a guided nature boat tour. Keep an eye out for white herons, royal spoonbills, and little blue penguins.
- Okarito Trig Walk: A steep but rewarding 1.5-hour return hike through lush rainforest to a lookout with panoramic views of the lagoon, Southern Alps, and Tasman Sea.
- Three Mile Lagoon Walk: An easy 40-minute walk along the beach and through coastal forest to a serene lagoon – ideal for birdwatching and a picnic.
- Stargazing: Okarito is a Dark Sky Sanctuary – on a clear night, the Milky Way is so bright it casts shadows. No light pollution here.
- Local Heritage: Visit the historic Okarito Schoolhouse (now a museum) and the old wharf, remnants of the gold-mining era.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least one full day and one night to truly soak in the tranquility. Arrive in the afternoon, do the Trig Walk for sunset, then enjoy a dark-sky experience. The next morning, kayak the lagoon or take a boat tour. If you're pressed for time, a half-day (4–5 hours) allows for the Trig Walk and a quick lagoon paddle, but you'll miss the stellar night skies.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier: Just 25 minutes north, you can combine a glacier hike or heli-hike with Okarito's calm – a great contrast.
- Whataroa: A tiny town 15 minutes south, known for the White Heron Sanctuary Tours (seasonal) – the only place to see kotuku nesting.
- Lake Mapourika: A beautiful, mirror-like lake 20 minutes north, perfect for kayaking or a short walk through nikau palm forest.
- Gillespies Beach: A wild, black-sand beach 30 minutes south via a gravel road – seal colonies and the remains of gold dredges.
