Just a short detour off State Highway 1 on the wild Kaikōura Coast, Ohau Point Seal Colony offers one of New Zealand's most accessible and rewarding wildlife encounters. Here, a sprawling colony of New Zealand fur seals (kekeno) lolls on rocky platforms and in sheltered coves, their barking calls mingling with the crash of the Tasman Sea. It's a raw, elemental scene that captures the untamed spirit of the South Island's east coast – and you can get surprisingly close without disturbing them.
Highlights & What to See
- Seal colony viewing platform: A short, well-formed track leads from the carpark to a fenced lookout, offering superb views of dozens of seals – including adorable pups in summer – draped over rocks and surfing the shallows.
- Baby seal nursery: From November to January, newborn pups stay close to the shore while their mothers fish; watch them play in tide pools from a respectful distance.
- Fur seal behaviour: Spend time observing their antics – territorial males jostle, mothers call to pups, and sleek bodies glide through the surf. Binoculars add another layer.
- Kaikōura coastline: The dramatic limestone cliffs and turquoise water make this a photogenic stop even without the seals. Look for seabirds and, occasionally, dolphins offshore.
- Ohau Waterfall Walk (nearby): A 20-minute loop through native bush leads to a pretty cascade – a nice leg-stretcher if you need one.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour for the seal colony itself – enough to soak in the scene, snap photos, and watch the seals' daily dramas. It's a perfect quick stop on a road trip, especially if you're driving between Kaikōura and Blenheim or Picton. Combine it with a visit to the Kaikōura Peninsula (30 minutes south) for a full morning of coastal wildlife.
