Mount Fyffe rises dramatically behind the coastal town of Kaikōura, offering one of New Zealand's most rewarding day hikes with panoramic views that stretch from the Kaikōura Peninsula to the Southern Alps. This 1,602-metre peak is a favourite among locals and visitors alike for its accessible trail and breathtaking payoff.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Views: From the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the Kaikōura coastline, the Seaward Kaikōura Range, and on clear days, even Aoraki/Mount Cook in the distance.
- Mount Fyffe Track: A well-maintained 8.5 km (one-way) trail climbs through native beech forest before opening onto tussock-covered slopes. The final push is steep but worth every step.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep your eyes peeled for kea (mountain parrots) and, if you’re lucky, the rare Kaikōura weka. The area is also prime habitat for New Zealand falcons.
- Sunrise or Sunset Hikes: The peak is a prime spot for either sunrise or sunset, casting golden light over the ocean and mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day (6–8 hours return) to complete the hike at a steady pace, including time to soak in the summit views. Start early in the morning to avoid afternoon cloud cover and to secure parking at the trailhead. If you’re short on time, you can still enjoy the lower sections of the track in a couple of hours.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Kaikōura Canyon: World-class deep-sea fishing and whale-watching cruises depart from the town.
