Marlborough is New Zealand's sun-drenched wine country, a place where golden vineyards roll down to the deep blue waters of the Marlborough Sounds. This region is synonymous with world-class Sauvignon Blanc, but its appeal goes far beyond the cellar door: think pristine waterways perfect for kayaking, historic towns, and a laid-back vibe that makes you want to linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Marlborough Wine Region – Cycle or drive between cellar doors in the Wairau and Awatere Valleys; the region's signature Sauvignon Blanc is a must-try, but Pinot Noir and aromatic whites also shine.
- Queen Charlotte Track – A spectacular multi-day walk or mountain-bike ride through native bush and coastal views along the Queen Charlotte Sound; even a day-hike gives a taste of its beauty.
- Marlborough Sounds – Explore this stunning network of drowned river valleys by boat, kayak, or on foot; wildlife includes dolphins, seals, and little blue penguins.
- Picton – The gateway to the South Island's ferry terminal, with a charming waterfront, the Edwin Fox maritime museum, and access to the Queen Charlotte Track.
- Blenheim – The region's main town, home to the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre (with a stunning collection of WWI aircraft) and a lively Saturday market.
- Cloudy Bay – The iconic winery that put Marlborough on the map; its cellar door is a pilgrimage for wine lovers, with tastings and vineyard views.
- Havelock – The self-proclaimed 'Greenshell Mussel Capital of the World' – don't leave without trying a bowl of succulent local mussels.
Suggested Time to Spend
Marlborough deserves at least two to three days to do it justice. Spend one day exploring the wineries on a self-guided bike tour from Blenheim, then dedicate another day to the Marlborough Sounds – either a boat cruise, kayaking trip, or hiking a section of the Queen Charlotte Track. If you're a keen walker or biker, allow three to four days to complete the entire Queen Charlotte Track. Add an extra half-day to visit Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre or go mussel-tasting in Havelock.
