Mackenzie Country is a vast, golden high-country basin in the central South Island, famed for its braided rivers, turquoise lakes, and the star-studded skies of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve. This is New Zealand at its most epic – a landscape of tussock plains, snow-capped peaks, and sky so big it feels like you can see the curve of the earth. The main settlements are Twizel, Lake Tekapo, and Mount Cook Village, each a gateway to some of the country's most breathtaking scenery.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

To do justice to the highlights, plan at least 2–3 days. Spend one day exploring the Lake Tekapo area and Mount John, a second day in Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park (with a short hike), and a third for Lake Pukaki, Twizel, and perhaps the Clay Cliffs. If you're short on time, a full day with a dawn start can cover the essentials, but you'll want to linger.
