Lake Wahapo is a serene, mirror-like lake on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, just south of Franz Josef Glacier. Surrounded by dense native rainforest and with the Southern Alps as a backdrop, it offers a peaceful retreat from the glacier crowds. The lake is part of the Okarito Lagoon system and is a haven for birdlife, including the rare kotuku (white heron). A short walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform with stunning reflections of the mountains.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Lake Wahapo is a quick stop – allow 20–30 minutes for the lookout walk and photo stop. If you're a keen birder or want to explore the Okarito Lagoon, add 1–2 hours. It's best visited in the early morning or late afternoon for calm waters and good light. Most visitors combine it with a half-day at Franz Josef Glacier.
