The Kaikoura Coast Track is a stunning coastal hike on New Zealand's South Island, offering dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Kaikoura Ranges, and abundant marine life. This privately managed track winds through farmland, native bush, and along rugged cliffs, providing a unique blend of wilderness and working landscape. It's a must-do for hikers seeking a less crowded alternative to the famous Great Walks.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal Cliffs & Beaches: Walk along towering cliffs with sweeping ocean views, and descend to secluded beaches where you might spot seals, dolphins, and whales offshore.
- Native Forest Sections: Pass through pockets of regenerating native bush, home to bellbirds, tui, and the occasional weka.
- Farmland & Historic Shelters: The track crosses working sheep farms and passes historic huts, offering a glimpse into rural life.
- Panoramic Views: From the highest points, gaze south toward the Kaikoura Peninsula and north toward Cape Campbell.
- Seal Colonies: The nearby Kaikoura Peninsula is famous for its fur seal colony, easily visited before or after your walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow two days to complete the full 22-kilometer track, with an overnight stay at one of the basic huts. Most hikers start from the southern end near Goose Bay and walk north to the Oaro River. You can also do shorter day walks on the southern section. Plan to start early to enjoy the coastal light and avoid afternoon winds.
