Hooker Valley Track

There are few walks in New Zealand that deliver such a pure, unfiltered dose of alpine grandeur as the Hooker Valley Track. This gently graded, well-maintained path leads you deep into the heart of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, crossing swing bridges over milky glacial rivers and ending at a terminal lake dotted with icebergs calved from the Hooker Glacier. On a clear day, the reflections of Aoraki (New Zealand's highest peak) in the still water are nothing short of spellbinding. It's an essential half-day outing that feels like a journey into the very bones of the Southern Alps.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most walkers complete the 10 km (6.2 mi) return track in 3 to 4 hours at a leisurely pace, including plenty of stops for photos and a picnic at the lake. It's a half-day trip from either Mount Cook Village (10 minutes' drive) or from accommodation in Twizel or Lake Tekapo (allow a full day). The track is accessible year-round, though in winter you may encounter ice and snow on the path – sturdy boots and microspikes are advisable. Start early to avoid afternoon winds that can ruffle the lake's mirror surface.
