Haast

Haast is a tiny settlement on the wild West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the rainforest meets the Tasman Sea. It's the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wahipounamu and a base for exploring rugged beaches, glacial rivers, and the hauntingly beautiful Haast Pass. The area feels remote and untamed, with a frontier spirit that invites you to slow down and soak in the raw nature.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travelers pass through Haast in a day, using it as a lunch or refueling stop on the drive between Wanaka and the glaciers. However, to fully appreciate the area, spend at least one night. That gives you time for a jet boat ride, a walk to a secluded beach, and a relaxed dinner at the local pub – watch the sunset over the Tasman Sea.
