Haast Town

Haast Town is a tiny, wild outpost on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island, where the Tasman Sea crashes against ancient rainforest and the Southern Alps rise abruptly from the coast. This is the gateway to the World Heritage-listed Te Wahipounamu, a place of untamed beauty where glaciers, rivers, and beaches meet. The town itself is a scatter of lodges, a general store, and a DOC visitor centre, serving as a base for adventurers exploring the remote southwest. Expect moody skies, roaring surf, and a profound sense of isolation that makes Haast unforgettable.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least one full day and two nights in Haast to soak up its remote atmosphere and tackle the key walks and activities. If you're driving the Haast Pass, a stop of 2–3 hours lets you stretch your legs on the short walks and grab a bite, but you'll want more time if you're keen on a jet-boat ride or a penguin-spotting walk. For those continuing south to Wanaka or Queenstown, Haast makes a natural overnight break between the glaciers and the lakes.
