Haast Pass is a dramatic alpine crossing that takes you through the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park, connecting the West Coast's rainforests with the lakes and mountains of Central Otago. The road itself is an adventure, winding past thundering waterfalls, ancient beech forests, and braided rivers. This is wild, untamed New Zealand at its best — a journey that rewards those who stop and breathe it in.
Highlights & What to See
- Fantail Falls – A short walk leads to a delicate cascade that fans over a mossy rock face, perfect for a refreshing break.
- Thunder Creek Falls – A powerful 28-metre waterfall just a few steps from the road, with a viewing platform that lets you feel the spray.
- Blue Pools Walk – An easy stroll through forest to swingbridges over crystal-clear water; on a sunny day the pools glow impossibly blue.
- Gates of Haast – Where the Haast River squeezes through a narrow gorge, creating churning rapids and a dramatic roar.
- Mount Aspiring National Park – The park itself is a highlight, offering backcountry tramps, birdlife (look for kea), and a sense of true wilderness.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least half a day to drive the pass from the West Coast to Wanaka or vice versa, but give yourself a full day if you want to do any of the short walks. The road is winding and slow — don't rush it. Start early to avoid afternoon clouds obscuring the views, and pack snacks and water as there are limited facilities.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka – A 90-minute drive from the pass, this lakeside town offers cafes, hiking, and the famous #ThatWanakaTree.
- Franz Josef Glacier – On the West Coast side, this glacier town is a great base for ice hikes and heli-tours.
- Fox Glacier – Slightly smaller than Franz Josef, with its own glacier walks and Lake Matheson reflections.
- Haast Beach – A wild black-sand beach near the pass's western end, where sea lions often haul out.
