Haast Pass

Haast Pass is a dramatic alpine crossing that takes you through the heart of Mount Aspiring National Park, connecting the West Coast's rainforests with the lakes and mountains of Central Otago. The road itself is an adventure, winding past thundering waterfalls, ancient beech forests, and braided rivers. This is wild, untamed New Zealand at its best — a journey that rewards those who stop and breathe it in.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least half a day to drive the pass from the West Coast to Wanaka or vice versa, but give yourself a full day if you want to do any of the short walks. The road is winding and slow — don't rush it. Start early to avoid afternoon clouds obscuring the views, and pack snacks and water as there are limited facilities.
