Glenorchy, a tiny settlement at the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu, is the gateway to some of New Zealand's most spectacular wilderness. Surrounded by towering peaks, ancient beech forests, and the braided Dart and Rees Rivers, this is where you come to feel the raw power of nature. Known as 'Paradise' for good reason, it's a must-visit for anyone seeking epic landscapes, world-class hiking, and a true escape from the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Paradise Road & the Dart River Valley: Drive the gravel road to the end, where the scenery becomes impossibly dramatic – this is the real Middle-earth.
- Glenorchy Walkway: An easy, scenic 5km loop along the lake and lagoon, with jaw-dropping views of the Humboldt and Richardson Mountains.
- Routeburn Track: One of New Zealand's Great Walks starts here. Even a short day hike to the Routeburn Flats hut offers incredible alpine scenery.
- Dart River Jet Boat & Wilderness Safari: Thrill-seekers love the ride up the braided Dart River, combining speed with stunning backcountry access.
- Rees River & Muddy Creek: A photographer's dream at sunrise or sunset, with reflections of the snow-capped peaks in the still waters.
- Glenorchy Lagoon Boardwalk: A peaceful, wheelchair-accessible walk through wetlands and birdlife, with views of Mount Earnslaw.
Suggested Time to Spend
Glenorchy itself is a half-day trip from Queenstown (45 minutes drive), but to truly soak it in, plan a full day. Drive the Paradise loop, take a short walk, and enjoy a picnic by the lake. For hikers, the Routeburn Track requires 2–3 days for the full crossing, but a day hike to Routeburn Flats is a rewarding 3–4 hour return. If you're short on time, the Glenorchy Walkway and a drive to Paradise can be done in 3–4 hours.
