Franz Josef Village is the cozy, rainforested gateway to one of New Zealand's most dramatic glaciers. Nestled in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast, this tiny settlement hums with the energy of adventurers gearing up to explore icy valleys and temperate rainforest. The village itself is compact but well-equipped, with a handful of lodges, cafés, and guiding companies that make it the perfect base for glacier hikes, heli-tours, and hot pools beneath the Southern Alps.
Highlights & What to See
- Franz Josef Glacier – The main draw: take a guided ice hike or a scenic helicopter flight to land on the glacier's blue-white surface. The valley walk to the terminal face is also spectacular.
- Te Waikoropupu Springs – A short drive north, these crystal-clear springs are among the purest in the world, with stunning turquoise water.
- Glacier Hot Pools – Soak in naturally heated rock pools surrounded by lush native bush – perfect after a day on the ice.
- West Coast Wildlife Centre – See kiwi birds up close in a nocturnal house, and learn about the region's unique wildlife.
- Okarito Lagoon – A 20-minute drive south, this tranquil lagoon offers kayaking, birdwatching, and the chance to spot white herons.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Franz Josef Village. With one full day, you can do a glacier hike (half-day) and still have time for the hot pools and a short rainforest walk. If you have two days, add a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon or a scenic flight over the glaciers. The village is small, so you won't need more than three days unless you're doing multiple heli-hikes.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
