The Copland Track is a classic West Coast tramp that leads you from the rainforest to the alpine zone, culminating in natural hot pools at Welcome Flat Hut. This challenging out-and-back trail offers a true wilderness experience with dramatic river crossings, dense beech forest, and breathtaking views of the Southern Alps.
Highlights & What to See
- Welcome Flat Hot Pools: Soak in natural hot springs surrounded by mountain scenery – the perfect reward after a long day's hike.
- Beech Forest & Swingbridges: Walk through ancient beech forest and cross several swingbridges over the Copland River.
- Alpine Views: On clear days, enjoy stunning views of Mount Cook and the adjacent peaks from the upper track.
- Wildlife: Look for native birds like the kea, fantail, and robin along the trail.
- Historic Huts: Stay at Welcome Flat Hut (booked via DOC) or continue to Douglas Rock Hut for a more advanced trip.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers allow 3 days for the return trip: day one to Welcome Flat Hut (6–7 hours), day two for exploring the upper valley or relaxing in the hot pools, and day three back out. Fit trampers can do it in 2 days (overnight at Welcome Flat). The track is not suitable for day walks due to its length and river crossings.
